Counselling Manager

We are seeking to recruit a Counselling Manager to effectively support service coordination at an operational level and clinical supervision of our honorary therapists and contracted clinical supervisors. The Counselling Manager will have high levels of professionalism, strong leadership with excellent organisational skills.

Position Counselling Manager

Location: Hyrbrid between home and office – Teddington, TW11 8HT. Please note you will be required to spend approximately 60% of your time at the office.

Salary Range (depending on experience): pro rata of £32,910 – £38,745 incl.

Hours: Part-time 21 hours per week. We are able to offer some flexibility with the role. There may be potential for hours to increase as the service grows.  Please note the Counselling service operates one evening per week (Wednesdays) with plans to move to 2 evenings per week so evening work will be a requirement.

Contract: Permanent

Annual Leave: pro rata of 25 days leave plus bank holidays

About the Role

The charity’s Counselling service started a number of years ago now and it continues to grow and thrive. The team is led by the Counselling Manager who line manages the Counselling Coordinator and Counselling Officer. The service currently offers a blend of online and in person counselling delivered by volunteer therapists who may be working remotely.

You will be responsible for managing all aspects of the service including

  • Ensuring the service meets the quality and ethical standards required by the BACP and other relevant bodies.
  • Promotion of the service to clients, therapists, health settings and the wider voluntary and community sector.
  • Overall responsibility for managing a team of volunteer/placement counsellors to deliver the service.
  • Providing group or individual supervision to volunteer/placement counsellors as well as other contracted clinical supervisors as required.
  • Screening and assessing referrals, allocating clients to therapists and managing wait lists
  • Monitoring and evaluation of the service as well as report writing as required by funders

You will be working for an organisation of and for disabled people, working to improve access, choice, quality of life and independence for disabled people in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames and surrounding areas. The charity provides a range of services including benefits advice, money advice and information navigation service, a range of peer network social activities, counselling service, Spade gardening service, job club and much more.

About You

  • You must have a Psychotherapy/Counselling Qualification (Diploma minimum) or equivalent and extensive experience of providing psychological interventions. Ideally you have experience of providing support to people with complex needs including people with mental health conditions and disabled people.
  • You must have experience of clinical supervision and be a fully accredited member of BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy).
  • It is essential to have experience of integrative counselling, management and working within an organisational setting, together with a willingness to embrace and develop a broad range of counselling models. The job requires high levels of professionalism and leadership and management skills.
  • You should have experience of recruiting, inducting, case managing or line managing psychological therapists (paid or volunteers) and an ability to support a team of counsellors to ensure they achieve high standards of clinical practice in their delivery.
  • You will have demonstrable experience of working in the voluntary/statutory sector, ideally in a project management role. Experience of working within a clinical setting would be an advantage.
  • You must have demonstrable experience of carrying out client assessments and screening referral suitability. Knowledge of other services and mental health frameworks will be an advantage.
  • You must have excellent planning and organisation skills as well as the ability to work in a pressurised environment and prioritise workloads. You will have a clear understanding and ability to manage situations relating to client risk, safeguarding and complaints management.
